Backup Services
GS-ITS provides centralized backups of servers using the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Relevant facts to know about our backup services:
- Backups are done every 24 hours.
- Full backup tapes are rotated off-site on a schedule. Please contact GS-ITS computer support staff for retention details.
- No encryption support is available for data written to tape. Sensitive data must be encrypted prior to being backed up.
Checking a TSM Client's Backup Status
gsits-backup-report: If you would like to see what hosts and volumes for those hosts are currently being backed up, you can subscribe to the gsits-backup-report mailman list. Backup reports to this list are sent out daily. If you don't want to subscribe to the list, you may alternatively just view the list archives.
TiBS backup Clients
Some desktops systems are still using the older TiBS system for backups.
Backup status for TiBS clients can be checked with the tera command as follows. If the system has not been backed up in some time, please contact the GS-ITS computer support staff.
The following command, with the "-Q" option will report back immediately about when the last backup occurred and when the next scheduled backup will be:
$ sudo /usr/tibs/tera -Q Hostname set to client.example.edu for system client.example.edu Status Next Backup Last Backup Path Idle Incremental Mon Apr 11 02:02:45 2005 /home Idle Incremental Mon Apr 11 02:02:02 2005 /etc
Manual TiBS Client Backups
The following command will initiate a standardized backup from a Unix or Linux machine:
$ sudo /usr/tibs/tera
